Each club has its own idea of what hosting is all about. Here at LYC Minnesota we have developed our own unique system. In a nutshell being a host means to be the active coordinator and sponsor of an LYC Event. Basically there are there are three types of LYC Event Hosting: Bi-Monthly Social, Alternative Meeting and a Board of Directors Meeting.
Here is a description of the different Host categories:
Bi-Monthly Social Host:
Hosting can take place in a host home or at a designated location. The only stipulation is that the location be relatively safe, secure, have some degree of privacy and offers some form of parking. Expect attendance from about thirty to fifty people. For special events such as a Christmas or Halloween party attendance can easily double. Each host receives a $50 stipend to offset expenses involved with hosting, i.e., purchase of paper products, softdrinks, etc. It is also customary for several volunteers to help the host with the setting up and cleaning chores involved with the event.
Alternative Event Host:
Some examples of Alternative events: photography group, chat, gourmet night, hiking, bicycling, movie night, etc. All that is necessary to sponsor or host an alternative event is to contact the Events chairperson and suggest your activity or event. The Events chairperson will then check for any conflicts in the LYC calendar; book the event and put your event on the LYC schedule of events. There is no stipend for an alternative event. The host is responsible for coordinating how such events are to be paid for.
LYC Board of Directors Host:
This is a designated host of a LYC Board of Directors meeting. A $10 stipend is compensated to the host for basic coffee/tea/soda and whatever other refreshments the host wishes to offer the attendants for the meeting. Currently, the Board meets on the second Saturday of each month at 10:00 a.m.
On becoming a Volunteer:
LYC is a 100% volunteer organization. Every single event and activity performed or planned is the result of the work of volunteers. These volunteers often perform hours of work with little compensation or acknowledgement for their efforts. When asked why do they do it, a volunteer might say that its for a sense of fulfillment and love for LYC.
Many of these individuals already have full time jobs and are often hard pressed to find additional time away from their own families and partners. This is why it is so important and appreciated when an LYC member (You!) decides to volunteer their time assisting in an LYC event or activity.
It doesn't take a lot to be a LYC volunteer. Helping out at the Pride Booth, helping a host prepare for an event, giving another member a ride to an event, serving a term on the LYC Council. All of these gestures really help. Some members volunteer for a while, take some time off and then volunteer again. LYC Needs you!
